PROJECT: “SEA FLOATERS” FOUR GOUACHES
While walking along the Weskeag River at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean in Maine I watched the large masses of seaweed floating and churning in the flood tide. Masses of foam bubbles were forming, reminiscent of the ones I observed in the South Branch of the Raritan River in New Jersey that are the subject of my “Floaters” series. The constant movement of the bubble masses melding together and then breaking apart was similar to the Raritan bubbles but with the addition of buoyant seaweed and the rise and fall of the salt water. The shapes of the masses are reminiscent of those of Jean Dubuffet’s as well as the cellular forms I illustrated as a biomedical illustrator.
